VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. — A state appeals court is siding with the family of a local soccer player who died after practice.
Stetson University football player Nick Blakely, 19, died in August 2017 after withdrawing from practice due to dizziness and chest tightness.

Police say Blakely collapsed and appeared to have a seizure. Someone started performing CPR on him until he was taken to Florida DeLand Hospital, where he died.
Blakely’s family filed a lawsuit against Stetson University.

Last year, a judge ruled that Blakely’s decision to sign permits to play football shielded Stetson from liability.
On Friday, a three-judge panel overturned the 2021 ruling.

The second, a graduate of Archer High School near Lawrenceville, Georgia, majored in accounting.
