BRISTOL, Conn. (WFSB) — In 1959, Bristol High School was split in two, creating Connecticut’s newest football rivalry.

Bristol Central and Bristol Eastern started a Thanksgiving tradition that has lasted for over 60 years.

“It wouldn’t be Thanksgiving without coming to the Central Eastern Thanksgiving game,” said Steven Julius, Bristol. “It means a lot to the city, definitely.”

The Turkey Day game gives bragging rights to next year’s winning team, and the crowd brought the energy.

“You hear the crowd. They get into it and they love it. It’s really cool,” Bristol Mayor Jeff Caggiano said.

The first touchdown of the game was an unbroken 38-yard run into the end zone.

This fierce rivalry has been dominated by Central in recent years.

Before that, it was Eastern who consistently won the Battle of the Bell.

Central continued their recent dominance today winning 13-6.

Alumni and parents enjoyed the game on the sidelines at historic Muzzy Field where Babe Ruth hit a home run in an exhibition game in 1919.

“There’s nothing more exciting for us than getting on the bus at Eastern and coming to Muzzy Field and playing,” said Eastern graduate Paul Levesque.

There was a moment of silence before the game for Bristol Lieutenant Dustin DeMonte and Sergeant Alex Hamzy who were killed on October 12.

“What I’ve seen in Bristol this year is very heartwarming,” Mayor Jeff Caggiano said.

Their badge numbers were spray painted on the end zone alongside a thin blue flag.

“We need family and friends to get through the tough times and I think that’s a lesson we’ve learned here in Bristol,” Mayor Caggiano said. “The community is still in shock, but I like to see that we are getting back to a sense of normality.”

“It wouldn’t be Thanksgiving without coming to the Central Eastern Thanksgiving game,” said Steven Julius, Bristol.
