Disappointment for CeeDee Lamb turned to joy for the Cowboys tight ends in Thursday’s Thanksgiving victory over the New York Giants.

Lamb thought he caught a huge one-handed touchdown in the back of the end zone to give the Cowboys a 28-13 lead in the fourth quarter. But officials ruled his left heel landed out of bounds at the back of the end zone, nullifying the spectacular first down play.

No matter. Peyton Hendershot made up for it on the next play while adding a new twist to a Cowboys Thanksgiving tradition. At second base on the 2-yard line, Dallas sent four tight ends for the play on the goal line. Dak Prescott put Hendershot back on a misdirected play and Hendershot ran into an unbroken left tackle for the score. He headed for the Salvation Army kettle behind the end zone.

He was joined by fellow Cowboys Dalton Schultz, Sean McKeon and Jake Ferguson, who all jumped into the kettle. Hendershot stayed outside the kettle and started playing a game of mole kicking where the football was the hammer and his teammates were the moles.

It was a next-level iteration of a celebration that has become a Dallas Thanksgiving tradition. Ezekiel Elliott got the party started in 2016 when he jumped into the kettle to celebrate a touchdown. He led the celebration in 2018 by putting money and Prescott in the bucket after the scores. These celebrations drew the ire of the NFL, which fined Elliott $13,369 for unsportsmanlike conduct.

That didn’t stop the Cowboys from following the celebration while highlighting charity. Team owner Jerry Jones fully supports the tradition and has in the past offered to cover fines imposed for the celebration. Here’s a guess he has his tight ends covered in case the NFL frowns at Thursday’s celebration.
