Maria Sakkari reacts with revenge on Jessica Pegula at WTA Finals

World number 5 Maria Sakkari says she understood being aggressive was the only way to play Jessica Pegula as she was happy she was able to start her WTA Finals campaign with a win. On the opening day of the WTA Finals, Sakkari beat world number 3 Pegula 7-6(6) 7-6(4).

Just a week earlier, Pegula had crushed Sakkari 6-2 6-3 in the Guadalajara final. After beating Pegula in the WTA Finals, Sakkari said she didn’t think the American underestimated her. “I was very aggressive. If you’re passive, Jess will just make you run — she’ll hit the ball really hard, and that’s it.

I think it’s always easier for the player who loses the first game than for the player who wins. The winning player has all the pressure. I don’t think it ever crossed her mind that it’s going to be an easy match because she beat me a week ago.

I never felt like she underestimated me today,” Sakkari said, according to the WTA website.

Sakkari lands first top-5 win of 2022

Beating Pegula, Sakkari picked up his first top-5 win of the season earlier. When Sakkari was told about this stat, she seemed surprised.

“In all those tournaments I did well, I beat some really good players – I beat Coco [Gauff], I beat Pegula. So many players who weren’t in the Top 10, but at the same time now they’re in the Top 5. I beat [Elena] Rybakina but because of the [Wimbledon] points that don’t count, she doesn’t have the real ranking she’s supposed to have,” Sakkari admitted.

Sakkari, 27, made the WTA Finals semi-final on his debut last year. Now she started with a victory and is certainly in a good position to reach the semi-finals of the prestigious end-of-season tournament again.
