Shazam: Fury of the Gods will finally hit theaters next week and early reactions to DC’s sequel have started pouring in Twitter. From the Sounds of Things, If You Liked The First Movie, You’ll Love It Shazam: Fury of the Gods, with early reactions calling the film a super-powerful sequel that keeps things funny and emotional. DC Studios’ James Gunn leads the pack, though he may be somewhat biased.
“Gifted with the powers of the gods, Billy Batson and his fellow adoptees are still learning to juggle teenage life with adult superhero alter-egos,” reads the official synopsis. “But when the Daughters of Atlas, a vengeful trio of Old Gods, arrive on Earth in search of the magic stolen from them long ago, Billy – aka Shazam – and his family are thrown into a battle for their superpowers, their lives and the fate of their world.“
Whether we’ll see Shazam again in the new DC Universe remains to be seen, but that could all depend on how the sequel performs at the box office. Director David F. Sandberg recently said, “What I’ve been told is that there’s nothing in the Shazam movies that contradicts DC’s future plans. So the opportunity for more Shazam is there and if that’s what you want, your best bet is to go see the movie.Zachary Levi previously said he was not recast. Levi also came to the defense of DC Studios’ James Gunn when fans began to criticize him for his choices regarding the franchise. “You have no idea of the reasoning behind the decisions that are being made,“said Levi. “The amount of guesswork and rumour, drama and nonsense that keeps swirling around on Instagram and Twitter is laughable. It’s incredibly laughable. So I would just say be patient and give them space and time to really try and do something special. And I think something DC deserves to have and something that [Zack] Snyder tried to do it, and it ultimately didn’t materialize, guys.“
Shazam: Fury of the Gods will be released in theaters on March 17.
