The United States is the only country in the world with more civilian-owned guns than people. While most of the approximately 400 million firearms in the United States are owned by law-abiding citizens, some of them inevitably end up in the wrong hands.

Each year, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives traces hundreds of thousands of firearms that have been used or are suspected of having been used in the commission of a crime. While not all guns used in crime are tracked, ATF data reveals that in every state there is at least one city that appears to account for a disproportionate share of gun crime.

The ATF traced a total of 15,526 firearms in Tennessee in 2021. Of these, 6,440, or 41.5%, of all firearms traced in the state were linked to crimes against Memphis. Meanwhile, Memphis makes up just 9.2% of the state’s total population, according to estimates from the US Census Bureau’s 2021 American Community Survey.

Nashville accounted for the second-largest share of gun tracing in the state in 2021, at 10.7%, while Chattanooga ranked third, accounting for 10.2% of all firearms traced by the state. ‘ATF that year. Nashville and Chattanooga represent 10.0% and 2.6% of Tennessee’s total population, respectively.

All gun trace data comes from the ATF and the total number of gun traces by state includes only those in which a city or town has been identified.
