CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) – Average gasoline prices in South Carolina have surged over the past week as prices jumped 19.7 cents, bringing the state’s average price per gallon at $2.92, according to GasBuddy’s weekly survey of state gas stations.

The cheapest gasoline price was $2.45 on Sunday while the most expensive was $4, a difference of $1.55 a gallon.

Prices in Palmetto State are 8.6 cents per gallon lower than a month ago and 9 cents lower than a year ago.

On Monday morning, the cheapest gas in the Tri-County was at a Goose Creek station selling gas for $2.59 a gallon.

Nationally, the average price per gallon rose 12.3 cents last week, to an average of $3.17. The national average is down 22.5 cents from a month ago and sits 9.5 cents lower than a year ago, according to GasBuddy data compiled from more than 11 million of weekly price reports covering more than 150,000 service stations across the country.

The national average for a gallon of diesel fell 1.4 cents over the past week to $4.67 a gallon.

“For the first time in two months, the nation’s average gasoline price rose sharply last week as extremely cold weather led to numerous refining issues, shutting down more than a million barrels of refining capacity. , driving up wholesale prices,” GasBuddy Head of Petroleum Analysis Patrick De Haan said. “Furthermore, China’s reopening plans have given markets inspiration that global oil demand will begin to recover, as China’s nearly three-year Covid-zero policies appear to be coming to an end. While the pump jump will likely be temporary as most refiners come back online after cold weather issues, some regions like the Rockies could see more price increases than others as weather shutdowns cold weather is hitting the region quite hard, with refinery likely remaining down through the first quarter of 2023. Most regions have already seen the bulk of the upside, but if oil continues to recover, further increases could to be in lessons.
