Nov 24 (Reuters) – Ford Motor Co (FN) is recalling nearly 519,000 sport utility vehicles (SUVs) in the United States due to fire risks from possible cracked fuel injectors and will urge owners to have them inspected their cars, he said Thursday.

The No. 2 US automaker by sales said the recall covers model year 2020-2023 Bronco Sport and Escape SUVs with 1.5-liter 3-cylinder engines, many of which were also recalled in April because an oil separator housing could crack and develop a leak which could cause an engine fire.

Ford said when the engines of SUVs covered by the latest recall are running, a cracked fuel injector could cause fuel or fuel vapor to build up near hot surfaces, potentially leading to an underhood fire.

Once repairs are available, dealers will update vehicle software to detect if a fuel injector is cracked and provide an in-dash message to alert drivers.

“If a pressure drop in the fuel rail is detected, engine power will automatically be reduced to minimize any risk, while allowing customers to drive to a safe location, stop the vehicle and take provisions for maintenance,” Ford added.

Dealers will also install a tube to drain fuel from the cylinder head and away from hot surfaces and check for excessive fuel smell near the top of the engine.

Ford said it has 54 total reports of 1.5-liter underhood fires, including four with cracked fuel injectors. Another 13 or so were likely caused by a leaking fuel injector.

There are no recall-related fatalities.

Ford said it is not telling owners to stop driving vehicles under this recall. The company predicts a low failure rate for fuel injectors with external leaks.
