Kentucky coach John Calipari is asking Wildcats basketball fans to do something they aren’t used to doing and, really, aren’t very good at doing.

He asks them to be a little patient, and he asks for it even before the start of the season.

“We are not where we need to be right now. And I’m looking at November and December saying we might be a bit shaky,” said Calipari, who hopes the injury bug “hit us early this year,” instead of last year at the most crucial times of the season.

Calipari was brutally honest, as he often is, when giving his outlook for the 2022-23 squad. He knows the Wildcats have huge potential, but he also knows they’re not there yet as the regular season draws near — not even close.

“I love coins,” he said. “But let me explain, and you know I’m honest about some things. What we build, these guys do it all. … But what we have to do to win at the highest level is going to take a little time.

Calipari presented his long-term vision for this season.

“Every day, get better. The picture of that is January, February, we have to be at our best,” Calipari said. “Good group. Let’s have a little fun. Let me coach. Let me encourage these guys. Let our fans enjoy the ride.
