Police: 3 women injured by fireworks on University of Minnesota campus

Many lives were put at risk near the University of Minnesota last weekend when Minneapolis police said someone threw a firework into a crowd at a Halloween party.

MINNEAPOLIS (FOX 9) Many lives were put at risk near the University of Minnesota last weekend when Minneapolis police said someone threw a firework into a crowd at a Halloween party.

Explosions and sirens engulfed Saturday night, as senior student Wes Lideen sat in his bedroom at Beta Theta Pi House, “Literally like a big boom and sounded like a bomb went off,” Wes described.

Three people were injured after someone apparently threw a firework display into a crowd in the 1600 block of University Avenue.

“There’s a potential for lifelong scars that are going to result from this one,” Minneapolis police spokesman Garrett Parten said. “I can only imagine what the parents of these young girls are thinking and imagining, it makes my stomach sick to think anyone would throw an explosive into a crowd.”

The female victims are between 18 and 19 years old. The incident involving them was just one of four involving fireworks in the area, over a period of about four hours.

A few blocks away, employees of Frank and Andreas confirmed that fireworks had been fired at a crowded line outside their restaurant.

However, when police arrived, officers said a large crowd had dispersed and no one appeared to be injured.

“It’s not funny, and if people were doing it for fun or thought it was a joke, it’s not, it’s a serious crime,” Parten said. “It’s like shooting a gun into a crowd, because the effect can be the same if a firework goes off near someone’s head. It can lead to death.”

Now the police are gathering surveillance footage to find the suspects. While each of the four incidents is being investigated separately, investigators are looking for similarities and possible links between them.
