A few people were injured and dozens had to find alternative accommodation after a fire tore through much of a two-story apartment complex before being extinguished by firefighters on Thursday afternoon in the south- is from Albuquerque.

AFR spokesman Lt. Tom Ruiz said one person had been hospitalized with a hand injury and two others had refused treatment. He said 24 apartments in the complex were affected by flames and smoke and 31 residents were displaced.

Ruiz said investigators are trying to determine the cause and origin of the fire but “a cause has not been determined at this time.”

He said firefighters responded around 12:15 p.m. to a fire at the two-story complex in the 1500 block of Columbia SE near Kathryn. Ruiz said crews found heavy smoke and flames coming from the second floor of the building.

He said a resident was seen on a second floor balcony and “needed to be rescued”. Ruiz said they used a ladder to save the resident as the apartment was “quickly filling with heavy smoke”.

He said another resident was found suffering from smoke inhalation in the back of the building. Ruiz said firefighters searched the building as crews fought flames up to 40 feet high from the roof.

He said they extinguished the fire without further incident.

Fire crews could be seen hosing down the charred remains of an apartment in the middle of the complex, towards the east end, as the crowd looked on.
