PITTSBURGH — The 2022 Backyard Brawl, the first on-court meeting between the Pitt Panthers and the West Virginia Mountaineers, set a new record for attendance at a sporting event in the city of Pittsburgh.

The crowd of 70,622 that packed Acrisure Stadium to see the Panthers and Mountaineers renew their historic rivalry shattered the previous record set by a different rivalry game. The 2018 contest between Pitt and Penn State set the previous record at 69,983 spectators.

The proximity of the Panthers’ opponents no doubt contributed to those screaming numbers, but Pitt fans were also excited to face these bitter foes.
