Pathaan Box Office Predictions Day 1: Shah Rukh Khan star set for ‘extraordinary’ opening; advance bookings exceed the Rs 54 crore mark
Shah Rukh Khan’s spy thriller opened to packed cinemas in India on Wednesday in one of the best Bollywood openings ever, despite protests from some religious groups over scenes they deemed obscene. The success of “Pathaan”, where Khan plays a spy fighting off a militant outfit, is crucial for India’s film industry which has seen a series of high-profile flops since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.
“It saw an outstanding opening, the second-best in Bollywood, even on a non-holiday, mid-week, when audiences aren’t going to the cinemas,” said Girish Johar, a producer and business analyst who tracks box-figures from desk.

Another report said that “Pathaan” sold around 556,000 tickets on the first day, second only to the record-breaking “Baahubali 2” 650,000 on the first day.

Of the 5000 Indian screens on which the film played, the occupancy rate was high at 65% to 75%, a rarity in Bollywood for an opening day of the film, especially since it was a mid-week outing and not a holiday outing.

The film will be shown on 8,000 screens worldwide, the largest of any Hindi film release.

Due to the “unprecedented” response, exhibitors have reportedly decided to ramp up the spy thriller’s screen count right after the film’s first morning shows.

Videos that went viral on social media showed moviegoers dancing inside theaters, waving their cellphones in the air and singing along to songs from the film as it played on the big screen.

According to a report on boxofficeindia, director Siddharth Anand broke the Rs 50 crore barrier in advance ticket sales. This is apparently the first time a film has taken this step.

The film seeks to earn around Rs 54 crore from advance ticket sales, which puts it number one on the list of highest advance collections. Actor Yash’s ‘KGF Chapter 2’ which grossed Rs 42.50 crore and ‘Baahubali: The Conclusion’ (Hindi) which grossed Rs 37.53 crore came second with a wide margin. Hrithik Roshan’s ‘WAR’ earned around Rs 29.53 crore and Ranbir Kapoor’s recent standout ‘Brahmastra’ earned Rs 27.36 crore when it was released in theaters last September.

The film follows the titular spy Pathaan who emerges from exile to stop the terrorist group Outfit X, led by John’s Jim, from launching a debilitating attack on India. It marks Shah Rukh’s return to the big screen after more than four years.

The film, which has a guest appearance by Salman Khan as fellow spy Tiger under the Yash Raj Films franchise, is expected to earn Rs 45-50 crore on opening day, signaling the much-needed revival of the movie. Hindi film exhibition industry which has struggled with a series of flops in 2022.
