James Corden has admitted to “inadvertently” telling a Ricky Gervais joke on his Monday night show after the late-night host was accused of stealing it.
“I inadvertently told a brilliant Ricky Gervais joke on the show last night, obviously not knowing it came from him,” Corden tweeted from “The Late Late Show with James Corden” account. “It’s great, because it’s a Ricky Gervais joke. You can watch all of Ricky’s great specials on Netflix. J x.”
In his monologue on Monday, Corden joked, “When you see Elon Musk talking about Twitter, he does this thing where he goes, ‘This is the town square. But that’s not the case, because if someone puts a sign in a town square that says ‘guitar lessons available’, you don’t make people in town say, ‘I don’t want to play guitar !’ But that sign wasn’t for you, it was for someone else – you don’t have to get mad about any of that.”
Gervais noted the similarity to a joke he told in 2018 and wrote “The track on the town square ad for guitar lessons is brilliant” in a since-deleted tweet that included Corden’s clip, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
JAMES ORDEN BREAKING SILENCE OVER ALLEGATIONS OF ABUSIVE BEHAVIOR AT NYC RESTAURANT: ‘IT WAS UNGRACIOUS’

During his 2018 “Humanity” stand-up special on Netflix, Gervais said Twitter was “like going to a town square and seeing a big billboard that says ‘Notice: Guitar Lessons’ and say, ‘I don’t want — I want guitar lessons!’ … Very well ! It’s not for you, then. Walk away, don’t worry.
Late night shows have a writing staff, so it’s unclear who actually started or wrote the joke or if they knew about the Gervais special.
The situation comes two weeks after Corden was accused of rude behavior towards restaurant staff while dining in New York. He apologized on his show, saying he “deeply regrets” making a “rude” comment to restaurant servers after repeatedly having to send back a dish his wife was allergic to.
Late night host James Corden broke his silence on Keith McNally’s accusations against him on his October 24 show a week later, he told a joke almost identical to that of Ricky Gervais.

“I don’t want too many eggs on the pudding but in the London Times on Friday Corden flip-flopped and told a huge lie AGAIN,” McNally wrote, including a quote from an interview the week last in which Corden denied “screaming” at the wait staff.
He also called Corden’s apology for his late show “contrived and bogus.”
