Kensington Publishing Corp. acquired Erewhon Books, an independent publisher dedicated to literary speculative fiction, science fiction and fantasy, for an undisclosed price.

Erewhon Books will continue to be led by publisher Sarah Guan, two-time Hugo Best Publisher Award finalist, who joins Kensington with four members of the Erewhon team, including advertising and marketing director Martin Cahill. The purchase includes approximately 12 backlist tracks and 10 other previously unreleased works. Starting in fall 2023, Erewhon will release 12 new hardcover titles in its first year.

Since its inception in 2018, Erewhon has published what it calls “hard to define books” by a range of diverse and marginalized authors, including HA Clarke, Angela Mi Young Hur, Victor Manibo and Kay Chronister, to more authors. established. , including CL Polk, E. Lily Yu, Benjamin Rosenbaum and Cassandra Khaw.

Steve Zacharius, President and CEO of Kensington, said he was impressed with Erewhon’s ability to build writers’ careers, which aligns with Kensington’s own philosophy. “We’re thrilled to amplify Erewhon’s considerable strengths while advancing their vision of thoughtful, effortlessly weird literary speculative fiction,” Zacharius said.

The current distribution and fulfillment agreements for Erewhon Books will remain in place until January 1, 2023, when the imprint will transfer to Kensington’s distributor, Penguin Random House Publisher Services.
